Why Fall is the Best Time In Winnipeg To Spot Dutch Elm Disease (DED)

🍁 What Makes Fall the Ideal Time to Spot DED?

As Winnipeg’s canopy shifts into autumn colours, Manitoba elms begin showing early signs of Dutch Elm Disease. Fall is the season when “flagging” becomes most visible — those isolated yellowing patches high in the canopy that stand out against otherwise green foliage.

🌿 What Is “Flagging” and Why It Matters?

Flagging refers to clusters of yellow, wilted leaves that appear suddenly on individual branches.

This is one of the earliest and most reliable signs of DED infection. Because fall leaf colour changes are gradual, these sharp yellow patches are easier to spot now than in mid‑summer.

🌳 Why Manitoba Elms Are at Higher Risk in Autumn

Cooler temperatures slow the tree’s natural processes, making symptoms more pronounced.

DED‑infected branches lose water flow, causing leaves to yellow and curl prematurely — often weeks before healthy elms begin their seasonal color change.

🔍 Where Homeowners Should Look First

Check the upper canopy, especially:

  • Single branches with sudden yellowing
  • Leaves that appear wilted or curled
  • Patches that look “out of place” compared to the rest of the tree

Flagging often starts at the very top — binoculars help.

🪵 Why Early Detection Matters Before Winter

Once winter arrives, symptoms disappear — making DED nearly impossible to identify until spring.

Catching flagging now allows ISA‑Certified Arborists to:

  • Confirm infection
  • Remove infected limbs
  • Prevent spread to neighbouring elms
  • Plan spring trunk injections for high‑value trees
